Education Empowerment LogoNearly one billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names.Cambodia’s functional literacy rate (defined as a person who can read, write, and calculate for his/her own or their community’s development) is only 37.1%.

Many people without skills, job training, and education are trapped in cycles of poverty and exploitation. Countless poor Cambodian families rely on their children to earn an income and support their needs. As a result, children often are forced into begging, collecting recyclables, or scavenging, making them targets for abuse, exploitation, and trafficking. The outcome is another generation of unskilled and uneducated persons. Education is a key to breaking these cycles of poverty that lead to exploitation. Education is empowerment!

Our Education Empowerment Program is an education sponsorship program for children living in the slum and street dwelling communities of Phnom Penh and in the street dwelling communities of Poipet.

School children

First Grade Class

As we’ve reached out to at-risk communities in Phnom Penh and with our street ministry in Poipet, we’ve seen and worked with a number of children that are not currently receiving education. Even though public education is free, the cost of uniforms, school supplies, and tutor hours (required for passing tests) makes it difficult for most persons living in poverty to afford. Likewise, many families with little means of education or finance require their children to work long days begging, collecting recyclables, or scavenging to make money for the family. These children are often abused, exploited, and trafficked – some of the most at-risk in the community. Many of the children have told us stories of their abuse and exploitation or of that of their friends.

Poverty is a contributing factor to the cycle of human trafficking. It is the reason why many parents or family members choose to sell their children. Likewise, lack of education and training fuels cycles of poverty and corrupt behaviors (such as thieving, gambling, drug use, and trafficking). Persons get trapped in debt and poverty, and as a result, may decide to sell their children or work in prostitution to earn a living to support themselves and their family.Studying 1

Education is a key to job opportunities, and, therefore, will break cycles of poverty, abuse, and human trafficking. It is a method of prevention, concerning anti-trafficking efforts, and programs that will provide education assistance are much needed in these poor and at-risk communities. Every child has the right to education.

Education Sponsorship

Your partnership will help a child at-risk, breaking cycles of poverty and exploitation.
By providing a love gift of $120 USD per month (full sponsorship support) or $60 USD per month (partial sponsorship support), you will connect with a Cambodian child in need and help support them in their education goals and related expenses, including all of the following:

  • Private school fees
  • School supplies (text books, notebooks, pens, pencils, and school bag)
  • Uniform and shoes
  • Gym clothes
  • School transport
  • Hygiene and Haircuts
  • Birth certificate

Lunch Program Sponsorship

Many children don’t have enough to eat, sometimes going days without food. Those going to school especially need food to concentrate on their studies. For $40 USD per month, you can sponsor a child in our School Lunch Program, which will provide one nutritious meal per day to a child enrolled in our Education Empowerment Program. School Lunch Program Sponsorships can be donated independently or in combination with Education Sponsorships.
